I am finally back in the glorious Lake District for a wild camping trip, testing out some incredible new gear alongside Mountain School UK. Despite the challenging wind and rain at Small Water, my Nemo tent, warm sleeping bag, and supportive sleeping pad kept me safe and comfortable through the night. Join me as I pack all this ultralight equipment into a 30L Black Diamond backpack, fire up an MSR stove, and survive the unpredictable weather on the fells.

Channel: @PaulMessner

I finally managed to get out to the beautiful Shropshire Hills with my mate Chris for a wild camp, pitching the Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo tent to see how it handles the summit conditions. We enjoyed a stunning sunset and cooked up some noodles on the MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe before the weather completely turned on us overnight. Despite the heavy winds and morning rain, the gear held up perfectly, and the sun even made a brief appearance just in time for the walk back down.

2026-09-21 PMSN We found a really nice little spot to camp in The Yorkshire Dales Watch ➔
Channel: @PaulMessner

I headed out with Andy on a wild camping trip straight up from Sedbergh into the stunning Howgill Fells in the Yorkshire Dales, hauling my backpack up the steep slopes to find a sheltered summit pitch. Testing out my homemade dehydrated meal for dinner, we pitched our shelters—taking shelter in the Durston X-Mid and Hilleberg Enan—while enjoying dramatic crepuscular rays and an incredible morning cloud inversion before packing down. It turned out to be a brilliant wild camp in the Yorkshire Dales before heading off to Staveley to test new gear.

2026-09-14 PMSN I've been thinking about how to make my tent better Watch ➔
Channel: @PaulMessner

I recently took my favourite single-hooped tunnel tent, the Hilleberg Enan, and figured out a few cheap modifications for making the tent better on the trail. By upgrading to a thicker 10mm pole and attaching lightweight metal rings with Dyneema cord, I gave the peg-out points much more flexibility, which is an essential feature for wild camping tents pitched on tricky or rocky ground. I also added a neat little ring to the door tie-back, making it super quick to secure without adding any noticeable weight to my pack.

2026-09-11 PMSN YouTube Wild Camping Isn’t Dead (It’s Just Different) Watch ➔
Channel: @PaulMessner

It's been ten years since I uploaded my first wild camping video, so I wanted to sit down and reflect on how much the YouTube scene has changed. In this video, I share my honest thoughts on the niche's current oversaturation, the relentless push for new gear, and the frustrating rise of clickbait thumbnails over genuine outdoor connection. Let me know your thoughts on the state of wild camping on YouTube and drop your favorite authentic channel recommendations in the comments!

2026-09-02 PMSN The 7 Levels of Wild Camping Watch ➔
Channel: @PaulMessner

I have experienced every phase of wild camping, starting from lugging a monstrous 100-liter Bergen up a hill to meticulously counting every gram in my pack. Today, I am breaking down the seven levels of evolution that most wild campers go through, ranging from the makeshift beginner to the comfort-seeking veteran. Join me as I explore the gear and mindsets defining each stage, and find out exactly which level you are currently at on your own journey.

2026-08-31 PMSN Why You Must Send This Text Message Before Your Next Wild Camp Watch ➔
Channel: @PaulMessner

I recently discovered the 999 emergency SMS service, which allows you to text for help using microscopic amounts of data even when you don't have enough signal for a voice call. In this video, I walk you through the incredibly simple process of registering your phone so you are prepared before your next wild camping or hiking trip. Take a minute to set this up right now, because it could genuinely save your life or someone else's if things go wrong off-grid.

2026-08-26 PMSN Sleep in a Bed, Not a Bag (Every ZenBivy Feature Tested) Watch ➔
Channel: @PaulMessner

I took the new ZenBivy ultralight bed system out for a wild camp in the Peak District to see if it really feels like sleeping in a real bed. Throughout the night, I tested out the mattress, sheet, synthetic quilt, and pillow, evaluating its draft-free design and overall comfort against my go-to Nemo pad. After a rainy night under the stars, I shared my final thoughts on its price, packability, and whether it's truly worth the upgrade for backpackers.

2026-08-24 HLBG Backpacking in the Cascade Mountains with the Hilleberg Team Watch ➔
Channel: @HillebergTentmaker

We believe outdoor life is the same as everyday life! A few team members from the Hilleberg U.S. office recently spent a night in the nearby Cascade Mountains in our home state of Washington. Together, they enjoyed a trip filled with great views, shared meals, and remarkable stargazing during the recent Perseids meteor shower, all from the comfort of their Helags, Nallo, and Unna tents.

2026-08-23 PMSN Ultralight Wild Camping - When the Heavens Finally Opened! Watch ➔
Channel: @PaulMessner

I headed out to the Peak District for a much-needed wet weather camping adventure with my mate Woody, who was tackling his first-ever wild camp in the area. We hiked up near Kinder Reservoir so I could test out the Hyperlite Mountain Gear Unbound 2, an ultralight DCF tent kindly loaned to me by Dan at Ultralight Outdoor Gear. After weeks of drought, the heavens absolutely opened up on us overnight, giving the new gear a proper thrashing before our hasty morning pack-down in the mist.

2026-08-19 HLBG Best bag for packing your Hilleberg tent. Watch ➔
Channel: @HillebergTentmaker

Did you know we deliberately don't use compression bags with our tents when packing them into a backpack? We prefer to let the tent conform to the shape of the rest of your gear, with the poles stored separately. This makes better use of the available space in your pack and avoids unnecessarily compressing the tent.

2026-08-14 HLBG How small do Hilleberg tents pack down? Watch ➔
Channel: @HillebergTentmaker

We often get asked how small our tents can pack down. In this clip, Petra Hilleberg explains how we think about pack size, including how to make the tent bundle smaller by packing poles and the tent separately.

2026-08-14 PMSN 87% of ALL Camping Gear is Identical (Don't Overthink It) Watch ➔
Channel: @PaulMessner

I took a walk in the warm summer breeze today to reflect on a trap we all fall into: overthinking our backpacking and camping gear choices. I break down my "87% rule," explaining how most reputable tents, backpacks, and stoves will do exactly what you need for the vast majority of your adventures. Even though I fully admit to being a gearaholic myself, I want to remind us all that the mountain doesn't care what tent you pitch, as long as you're out there making memories.

2026-08-08 PMSN A Budget Stove So Good, I Bought One Myself Watch ➔
Channel: @PaulMessner

In this video, I take a close look at the budget-friendly CampingMoon Micro Rocket Regulator Stove XD2F and compare it directly to its more expensive doppelganger, the SOTO WindMaster. I unbox the stove, check out its features, and run a real-world water boiling test to see if it can keep up with the original. To my surprise, this affordable knockoff holds its own and proves to be a fantastic option for anyone looking for solid performance on a budget.

2026-07-25 PMSN The Weird Wild Camping Habits We All Try to Hide Watch ➔
Channel: @PaulMessner

I'm taking a tongue-in-cheek look at some of the weird and wonderful habits we wild campers all seem to share, from obsessively matching stove brands with our gas canisters to awkwardly tripping over our own guy lines. We'll also laugh at how we pretend we aren't chasing validation on social media, the classic YouTuber habit of walking past our own cameras, and why I can't resist buying new gear or watching The Goonies in my tent. Whether you're carefully logging your base weight on a spreadsheet or just trying to survive the night without washing your tent pegs, I reckon you'll find at least one trait on this list that hits a little too close to home.
